In preparation for her up coming headlining tour, Lauren Calve showcased her talents in Sea Cliff, NY at Still Partners. Ill be the first to admit, I was a bit surprised at the size of this corner bar that would be showcasing the talents such as Lauren. But knowing other national recording artists play there like Andy Aledort, maybe I shouldnt be all that perplexed? Promoting her first full length CD, Shift, singer, songwriter, musician and artist(check out her self portrait on the cover of Shift) Lauren came to play! I had the distinct pleasure to cover Ms Calve’s performance and granted a short interview.
Long Island Sounds – You surround yourself with top of the line musicians for your first full length album. How did that come about? Did you handpick them, was it Dex Green or did they just happen to be sitting in the studio that day?? LOL
Lauren Calve – I had the good fortune to play with the best of the best Nashville musicians thanks to my producer, Dex Green. Thanks to his connections, I played with members of Sheryl Crow’s band including Fred Eldringham, Audley Freed, and Robert Kearns. Nashville is a surprisingly small and tight-knit community, so their involvement was very chill and organic. I absolutely loved working with them; honestly, I’m still pinching myself!
L I S – Has the reception of fans lived up to expectations?
L C – Yes, I’ve been very pleased with the reception of Shift! This album has made, by far, the biggest impact of any of my previous releases. The Nashville production and studio musicians are a major reason for that. I also attribute the positive reception to the authenticity of the sound and songwriting. Shift is definitely my most personal and genuine collection of songs. I really believe authenticity and vulnerability attract attention; both are qualities that we crave and need more of.
L I S – Where does your inspiration come from, theres a uniqueness in your sound which is refreshing. What other musicians do you listen to; who are your favorites?
L C – I cast a pretty wide net when collecting inspiration for my music. I love Delta blues, classic rock, 90’s grunge, and really deep, soulful songwriting. I’m really drawn to and inspired by songs that move me emotionally. There’s something really spiritual about music which is why I don’t like to put my musical interests or inspirations in a box. When you limit what you listen to, you limit your capacity to feel.
