Posted by Rod Argent is best known as the founder and keyboardist of the legendary British rock band The Zombies, whose timeless classics “She’s Not There” and “Time of the Season” helped define the sound of the 1960s. He later formed the progressive rock band Argent, which produced the enduring rock anthem “Hold Your Head Up.” Beyond his work as a performer, Argent has earned widespread respect as a gifted songwriter, arranger, and keyboard virtuoso whose influence continues to resonate with musicians today.
I had the pleasure of meeting Rod when he and his band performed at The Bear’s Den inside Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel. By that time, I had been promoted to Entertainment Manager, which often gave me the opportunity to greet artists as they prepared for their performances.
Rod was exactly as many people describe him—quiet, humble, and incredibly low-key. While he was setting up his keyboards, I walked over to introduce myself, and extended my hand.
As he shook it, I smiled and asked, “What’s your name?”
With a slightly puzzled look, he politely replied, “I’m Rod Argent.”
Before he had a chance to ask who I was, I followed up with, “…who’s your daddy?”
For a split second there was silence.
Then we both burst into laughter.
It was a completely unexpected icebreaker that instantly broke the tension and gave us a shared moment I’ll never forget. Sometimes the most memorable backstage encounters aren’t the long conversations or the photographs—they’re the spontaneous moments of humor that remind you these legendary musicians are people, too.
It’s a small memory, but one that still makes me smile every time I think about meeting one of rock’s true keyboard legends.
