When a tribute band/artist is all in and gives it their all, its almost as if youre seeing the actual artists live, right in front of you. With Bad Animals paying tribute to Heart, Completely Unchained replicating Van Halen or Live After Death paying homage to Iron Maiden, honoring their music heroes deserve only your best! And that’s exactly what Journeyman – A Tribute to Eric Clapton featuring Shaun Hague does.
Perhaps its just my assumption as to the era Shaun is replicating, however, considering his choice of tuneage as well as his garb, right down to his horn-rimmed glasses, one would easily believe hes stepping out of the 90’s and the Running on Faith Tour.
Starting us off with Lay Down Sally, Shaun and his band featuring Dina Bach provided backing vocals, Brandon Shephens on 6-string bass, Robert Monroe on Keys and Darius Peterson on the skins, they burned through some of Eric’s greatest hits including Forever Man and After Midnight, playing nearly an hour before setting the guitar down and taking a 20 minute break.
After grabbing a drink or two and changing out a broken string on his “blackie” guitar, the band was back in full force. The second set began with Cant Find My Way Home before serenading us with his rendition of Layla which was a mix of Eric’s Unplugged version and the original featuring Mr Monroe on Piano. From there, a couple Cream songs were thrown in for good measure including my favorite, Crossroads and Sunshine of Your Love.
Ive seen Eric Clapton in concert twice and I missed Journeyman the first time they toured the area, so I told myself Id make sure to be at the next performance. As a tribute artist is concerned, Mr Hague leaves it all on the stage. Every note, tone and little nuance that makes Eric Clapton, its plain to see that Shaun has more than replicated Claptons style, hes cloned his personality! And that is what makes Journeyman the ultimate tribute artist. Well done Shaun, well done!
